Reflective metal roof on a Florida home at dusk

How Green Roofing Systems Work in Florida

Reflective materials + radiant foil + attic ventilation. Three components that reduce cooling costs by up to 20% annually. Installed by Godwin Green Roofing since 1974.

What is a Green Roof and How Does it Work in Florida?

A green roof is an energy-efficient roofing system that uses three components to reduce heat transfer into your home. In Florida's climate — where air conditioning accounts for a significant portion of household energy use — a properly installed green roofing system can reduce cooling costs by up to 20% annually. Godwin Green Roofing installs complete green roofing systems for residential and commercial properties throughout Gainesville and Alachua County.

The Three Components of a Green Roofing System

Reflective Roofing Materials

Reflective roofing materials with high Solar Reflectance Index (SRI) ratings deflect solar energy before it reaches the roof deck. Godwin installs 26-gauge Gulf-Lok standing seam metal roofing from Tri County Metals and Atlas Pinnacle Pristine asphalt shingles — both chosen for their performance in Florida's intense UV conditions.

Radiant Foil Underlayment

radiant heat barrier underlayment is installed directly beneath the roofing material and reflects radiant heat before it enters the attic space. Rated to block up to 95% of radiant heat — standard insulation handles conduction and convection but does not stop radiant heat. A reflective barrier is required.

Attic Ventilation

Godwin installs solar-powered attic fans — thermostat-triggered units that activate automatically when attic temperatures hit a set threshold — and continuous ridge vents that provide passive airflow year-round. Florida attics without proper ventilation can reach temperatures above 160°F in summer.
